When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of UA alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

The Department of Development does not accept applications for or distribute scholarships. Scholarships are distributed through the University’s Office of Student Financial Aid.

Dowey, James L. and Carol S. Scholarship in Engineering

The James L. and Carol S. Dowey Scholarship in Engineering was established in 2000, and revised in 2018, to provide incentive and support for a talented engineering student(s) in The ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ’s College of Engineering.  Jim Dowey graduated from the college in 1972 with a degree in electrical engineering, while Carol Stalker Dowey holds a degree from the University in Political Science/Criminal Justice.

Following graduation, Jim completed various assignments in engineering and management for ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Standard Division of Eagle-Picher Industries, Inc., ultimately earning the title of President and leading the firm’s transition to ITW Quality Measurement Systems Group.  Retaining the title of President, Jim capped his 28-year career at the firm overseeing a group of global manufacturing companies of capital equipment for the tire and automotive industries.  Jim joined Air Enterprises, Inc. as President and COO in 2000 and went on to ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Special Machinery in 2005, serving as Vice President of Operations.  He joined Smithers Group in 2007 as Vice President and Managing Director for Rapra Technology, and in 2008 became President of Smithers Rapra, retiring in 2016.  In addition to his membership on The ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ College of Engineering’s Advancement Council, Jim is a past member of the College of Business Administration’s Advancement Council.

The James L. and Carol S. Dowey Scholarship in Engineering shall be awarded to a talented and eligible engineering student, or students, at The ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ.

Scholarships are awarded annually and applied directly to student accounts.  Award amounts and number of recipients may vary depending on available funds.  Candidates will be identified by the College of Engineering and final selection will be made by Jim and Carol Dowey.
