Green, Mary E. Leyden Memorial Endowed Scholarship

The Mary E. Leyden Green Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established December 31, 2015, in loving memory of Mary Leyden Green by her lifelong husband, Norman H. Green, a retired president and CEO of Burger Iron Company and a civil engineering graduate of The ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ.

Mary was a 1951 graduate of The ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ and earned a Bachelor of Science in biology. She cherished her time as a student and as a member and president of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. She was the recipient of UA's prestigious A-Key award for her academic and leadership achievements. She also was selected for entry in “Who's Who Among ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ in American Universities and Colleges,” a highly regarded national recognition program that has honored exceptional students since 1934. She continued her education with post graduate studies and became a Certified Medical Technologist.

In addition to her academic achievements and professional success, Mary was an accomplished artisan, and her beautiful handcrafted pottery, fashion designs, and floral arrangements continue to serve as outstanding examples of the grace she naturally exuded. Her generous spirit and many talents also led her to give selflessly to worthwhile causes, including The Christ Child Society, where she was a lifetime member, and to Our Lady of the Elms School, where she volunteered with children in the special needs education program.

Although Mary passed away unexpectedly on April 8, 2013, she believed that “to live in the hearts of those we leave behind is not to die.” Thus, her incredible spirit and legacy will live on at her alma mater through students who will benefit from her scholarship. The ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ was selected as the place to honor and remember Mary because of the Green family’s longstanding association with UA, from which many of the couple’s children and grandchildren have graduated.

The recipient of The Mary E. Leyden Green Memorial Endowed Scholarship will be a full- or part-time junior or senior in the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences majoring in biology or a related medical field. The scholar must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and be an “active or inactive” member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. Preference will be given to a student demonstrating financial need. The scholarship is renewable. Recipients will be chosen by the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences Scholarship Committee in conjunction with the Office of Student Finance Aid.
