Phelps, E. Jay and Eleanor Memorial Scholarship
The E. Jay and Eleanor Phelps Memorial Scholarship was established in 2013 by Nancy and Raymond Labuda in memory of Nancy’s parents, Jay and Eleanor Phelps. Mr. and Mrs. Phelps were lifelong residents of the ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ area and were married for 61 years. Mr. Phelps graduated from The ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ with a degree in business administration in 1949. He attended the University soon after being honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy after serving in WWII. After graduation, Mr. Phelps started a career in banking and eventually retired from FirstMerit.
During Mr. Phelps’ later years, he was a resident of Chambrel at Montrose, where he experienced residency, both in independent and assisted living. During those years, it became apparent that the staff and nurses at facilities such as Chambrel provided a high level of care and nursing to residents. It is in recognition of the unselfish efforts of those professionals that this scholarship is being established.
The E. Jay and Eleanor Phelps Memorial Scholarship is being established to assist students seeking to obtain a baccalaureate degree in nursing, with preferences given to students interested in palliative care. Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic merit and financial need by the director of the School of Nursing. Preferences also should be given to staff members of Chambrel at Montrose who are seeking such assistance. Notifications of recipients should be made to Nancy and Raymond Labuda.
